fair‑fish envisions a world where fishes are recognized as sentient beings, and humans give farmed fishes a good life while minimizing the suffering of those who are caught.
fair‑fish was founded in Switzerland in 2000 as a pioneering organisation for the welfare of fishes in fisheries and aquaculture. Since then, the association has worked to ensure that we humans do not treat fishes as an interchangeable resource, but recognise them as sentient beings with species-specific needs and abilities. This focus on the individual animal clearly sets fair‑fish apart from organisations that view fishes primarily from ecological or economic perspectives. fair‑fish sees itself as one of the very few voices worldwide that consistently places the individual fish at the centre.
From its vision, fair‑fish derives its mission to work for concrete improvements in fish welfare and to promote more sustainable and ethical consumer choices. To this end, fair‑fish is active in research, raises public awareness, seeks to influence policy, and provides practical advice to industry. Science, communication, and practice go hand in hand so that change is not only initiated, but also implemented.
Since its foundation, knowledge about fishes has multiplied, including through our database, the “fair‑fish database”, and our projects in aquaculture and fisheries. At the same time, public awareness is growing that fishes, too, can feel fear, joy, and suffering. Retailers are increasingly confronted with questions about overfishing and fish welfare, and some producers are beginning to improve rearing conditions and adopt more animal-friendly catching and slaughter methods. Yet the path towards truly animal-friendly and sustainable aquaculture and fisheries is still a long one. fair‑fish remains the critical, constructive voice for the welfare of fishes.
