Annually, around 90 million tonnes of fish and other marine animals are caught worldwide. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) does not count individual animals, but according to estimates from fishcount.org.uk, this likely amounts to between 0.8 and 2.3 trillion individuals per year.
Fishes suffer when caught
The fishing process on the high seas is pure horror for most fishes: they become stressed and injured in nets or on lines and ultimately suffocate on board without being properly stunned and killed. Another problem is that many fish products in supermarkets come from overfished stocks and it is difficult to find this out. The information that must be declared on the packaging by law is far too vague.
The Carefish/catch project (2021-2025), co-led by fair‑fish, was dedicated to developing fish welfare criteria for fisheries certified by Friend of the Sea. Take a look at a summary poster here.
